COVEN - WITCHCRAFT DESTROYS MINDS AND REAPS SOULS 1969 (US)

I doubt that I will be introducing this album to that many of you out there but if you haven't heard it than by all means start downloading it right now, this thing is unbelievable. I first heard this in maybe 96 or 97 at someones house that I stayed at after a show, but had heard about it long before that. Led by the beautiful and energetic front woman Jinx Dawson, this is truly astonishing stuff, totally satanic and evil and also completely wonderful heavy music and lyrics, some of the songs get so deep inside my brain, that I cant stop thinking about them, "The White Witch of Rose Hall" is especially addictive. I have burned this album out over and over again through the years and lately I have been playing it a lot again, so I'm posting it. Any serious rock fan will listen to this and hear tons of ways that this has influenced other great heavy rock, metal and goth artists since its release. Totally a undeniable classic, so check it out!

LEZLIE PAICE - FIGHTING MAN 1983 (SWE)

Total Swedish Sabbath worship from 83, what else could you ask for right? Both of these are pretty catchy, at first I didn't like the vocals that much but they totally grew on me after a couple of listens. The guitars on the a-side are very heavy and dark but still in the 70's mold for sure, an excellent track. The b-side is a bit different, still heavy once it gets going but at first it sounds like a bad KISS track or worse(if thats possiable). Of course I gotta say something about the cover, its looks like it was done with color pencils or some shit and I fucking love it!

First of all sorry for the lack of posts lately, I have just been extremely busy. So let's get on with it. Today we have some great neanderthal heavy rock, totally backwards and fuzzy. Killer fucking tunes and very amateur stoner vocals make this pretty much amazing.This uber rarity was only released as a test pressing of 52 copies. So good luck owning one of those right? Despite the weird name, this is really a gem and has some truly great parts. The best track here would have to be "Hassles" followed by "Clown on a Rope" a close second. METAL MIRROR - ROCK AN' ROLL AIN'T NEVER GONNA LEAVE US / ENGLISH BOOZE 1980 (UK)

Another blazing single by a great English band. I posted the Heavy Metal Heroes albums a few days back which features a song by them. I had forgotten how good they were and how good this single was. Rock 'n' Roll and Motorhead influenced I think. My buddy Chris Hutton had just mentioned these guys to me the other day because of those comps. So I checked this record out again it really kicked my ass. "English Booze" is the best track but their both good for sure. I hope you guys dig this single as much as the comp track....Enjoy!

MARQUIS DE SADE - SOMEWHERE UP IN THE MOUNTAINS / BLACK ANGEL 1981 (UK)

Here's one that's great for driving around at night totally stoned? I love this single and its a real stand out from most NWOBHM bands, they actually seem far more like 70's heavy rock to me. The keyboards sound kind of 80's but the songs are slow and a little weirder than most. The lyrics are certainly from a depressed and reclusive stand point and I can identify heavily with "Somewhere up in the Mountains". I would love to live in the mountains, get baked and listen to records all day, who wouldn't right? The vocals are pretty eccentric at times but also very heavy and cool. Anyway this is fantastic piece of wax and well deserving of your time.

FRACTION - MOON BLOOD 1971 (US)

Wow what a heavy and amazing record this is. This is truly some blueprint stoner rock, unbelievably obscure. This record has acquired quite a cult following over the years and this should be required listening for anyone into heavy 70's music, doom metal or even the bullshit that passes for stoner rock now-a-days. Beyond classic. This is pretty original stuff, not at all like the Sabbath clones of the day. It seems more like slowed down 60's rock turned up to 11 to me. Damn good! The guitars are blazing and the singer comes somewhere between Jim Morrison and Simon Stokes, with some very rowdy vocals. Raw but with a great set of pipes. Originally limited to 200 hundred copies, forget ever owning the original vinyl. The going price will shock you. Not a bad track on this one.

The Thrasher - project was put together by people in New York based bands and funded by Combat Records. Produced, directed and arranged by The Rods drummer Carl Canedy along with Blue Cheer's guitarist Andy 'Duck' McDonald. Its totally crazy that this ever got done or released, check it out!

GRAND THEFT 1971

Here's one I know absolutely nothing about, I'm not even sure where I got it really. Maybe the old Chris goes rock site, but I just don't remember. Searched for info on this record didn't really find anything useful. If anyone knows anything about this I would love to hear from you. To me this sounds like Screaming Lord Sutch singing for The Pink Fairies. Throughout this whole record there is a weird sense of humour and plenty of nonsense, but also some very heavy jams. The entire record is kind of a sloppy drug fueled mess, but quite enthralling. All in all a very fun and entertaining record to listen to. Unique and original.

HEAVY METAL HEROES VOLUME ONE 1981 + VOLUME TWO 1982 (UK)

Alright here are two totally amazing records full of great music by fucking top notch bands, so many good tracks here its unbelievable. I was talking the other day to my good friend Jeff Clayton from the mighty ANTiSEEN , the only punk band that matters, about these albums and in particular the Soldier track on volume one called "Storm OF Steel", of course Jeff's tastes are impeccable and this song is just plain killer, thanks Jeff for reminding me of these great records. Both of these albums have a lot to offer but the first one is best. The second one is a little more obscure in the band selection but still a lot gold for classic metalheads. Some of the truly classic tracks here include Jaguar's "Stormchild", Witchfinder General's "Rabies" and Soldier's "Storm Of Steel". These are really good releases for sure. Not to be missed....Enjoy!

DRUID - FOUR CURSES 1986 + VAMPIRE CULT 1989 (US)

Fucking fantastic metal here from the obscure Druid. Very upbeat and amateur, just like I like it. I have to admit though that at first I only gave this band a chance because of the bizarrely childish cover for the "Vampire Cult" album. The artwork for "Four Curses" is slightly better but I just fucking love that ridiculous Vampire Cult" cover, its amazing! There is a different cover out there on a re-release but why would anyone want to change this masterpiece right, bastards! Formed in Boston in 1985 these are their only two releases. I have read reviews that call this doom metal and it is doomy at times but I think its to energetic and way to fast and punk influenced to be anything close to true doom. Much more in the NWOBHM vein of things to me. These guys had to feel pretty out of place by 89, total throwbacks. See what you think about the mighty DRUID!!!!

HARSH REALITY - HEAVEN & HELL 1969 (UK)

Classic shit here, definitely heavy for 69. Its not Sabbath but the cover makes up for a few of the mellower tracks. Weird and different for the most part, this fall somewhere between Vanilla Fudge and the better Steppenwolf albums. I cant see anyone who likes heavy rock music not digging this oddity. Again not the heaviest record I have heard from 69 but a definite keeper.

Alright here's another weird one for you. You might remember my Delia Derbyshire post a couple months back, well this pretty much goes hand in hand with that. Though this is a couple of years earlier and maybe a little more important. I don't like it as much as Delia's stuff, but you have to give this chick credit. This is very basic stuff, even a little boring at times, but take in to consideration that the sounds you are hearing are for the most part the first of their kind. Many arguments could be made that if she and Desmon Briscoe hadn't campaigned for an electronic music dept at the BBC, that electronic music as we know it may have never existed. However she wasn't very happy at the BBC's lack of true interest in electronic music and resigned about a year later, starting her own studio known as Oramics Studios for Electronic Composition. Cranking out sounds for film and T.V., one of my favorites is the music and sounds for Jack Clayton's 1961 horror film The Innocents. Besides being a electronic music innovator, she had plenty of other significant achievements including being the first woman to direct an electronic music studio, the first woman to set up a personal studio and the first woman to design and construct an electronic musical instrument. Great piece of wax from these crust punk legends. I like a lot of their stuff but I think this is the best and its one of the first things I ever heard from them. I bought this in the Cut Corner Record Cellar at the same time that I got their classic "Fallout" single. This is a heavy record and it sounds quite a bit better than some of their of recordings. I love the male and female vocals and there are some very cool riffs. If you already like this type shit, then you will have most definitely have heard this, but if not check it out you might really like it. Hail Metal Punks!

Killer metal record here for those of you who dig female vocals and Rock 'n' Roll attitude. Formed in 81, they only put out two albums and two demo's. This is the second album and I think it's there best. A lot of great songs and a lot of energy. I simply love Maryann Scandiffio's vocals. Sorta like Doro Pesch at times, but not that perfect. She was also featured on the "Burning at the Speed of Light" album by Thrasher, which is also a good album and features tons of other cool metal luminaries. Killer stuff!
