HURTFUL WITCH-SPECTRA DEMO 1985 (italy)

This is pretty horrid, but in a good way. Darkness drenches ever corner of this demo, atmosphere abound! But it's really more about Roberta "Morgana" Delaude's vocals, which to be honest sounded like Larry May(Candy Snatchers) to me at first. Anyone who is a CANDY SNATCHERS fan will hear the resemblance immediately. Otherwise this is almost thrash but still in the classic metal vein. I love the basement sound of this demo and the overall lack of quality here, really makes for something special. When the guitarist (Claudio Dauducco) hit the first solo's ,I really wondered if they could pull it back together and they did...sort of. This has a cool horror vibe to all the songs and even some weird keyboards are used here and there. The music goes from fast pace to doom pace and back again, my favorites being "Were fire", a fast rocker that threatens to fall apart at any moment and "Behind my eyes" which is the most metal track here by far and it's another fast one. "Lost angel" is also good but I like the other two better. The fact is that I just love this chicks vocals, very different and unique to say the least. She went own to form here own band called MORGANA, which I also liked and the guys went on to JESTER BEAST, This prime demo shit get it now!

MANINNYA BLADE - THE BARBARIAN SINGLE 1984(SWEDEN)

Here's another one I really don't know that much about, formed in 1980 and split around 1988. This band at one time featured guitarist Mikael "Mike Wead" Wikström (Mercyful fate,King diamond, Candlemass, Abstract algebra, Momento mori and Hexanhaus) the rest of the guys seemed to go on to HEXANHAUS after the break up. This is another one with an awesome photo cover, like I mentioned before I love this fucking style cover. Let's see hear, first we've got "The barbarian" ,a rather heavy creeper with the title being slung out at each break in a great Swedish accent, also this track has a cool solo and was made for some good old fashioned headbanging. This one is actually pretty heavy at times and plodding like some of the other bands that Mike Wead went on to. Next is "Ripper attack" which almost rides the NWOBHM line, not quite though .Its a bit thrashy though, but I really like the "Ripper" theme of the song (big surprise I'm sure) even if the lyrics are rather cheesy. The solo in this one is kind of shrill but effective. All together this is a good single, not prefect but good.I didnt like it as much at first, but know it has grown on me. They also have an album called "Merchants in metal" that was maybe a little better than this single and is closer to thrash than classic metal. It sounds a little better but doesn't have this kind of energy. So check this out already you roop scoop!

WITCH CROSS 1983 (denmark)

Here's a real rocker, very NWOBHM-ish stuff. Formed in 1979 in Copenhagen Denmark, but split up sometime after 1986. This, their first and only single is a really solid piece of heavy rock. The first track "Are you there" is just killer,high energy rock. A really great track that will please any NWOBHM fan. The b-side is the less than classic "No angel" ,while not as good as the a-side its still a good tune and as good as most this kind of stuff. These guys only studio album "Fit for fight" was recorded by Henrik Lund ,the same guy that engineered the first two MERCYFUL FATE albums. Though not perfect its a pretty good album that You check out if you like this single.These guys did a couple of demos during their short run, I don't have them so if anyone does ,please let me know

TRIARCHY - SAVE THE KHAN single 1979 + METAL MESSIAH single 1981 (uk)

Formed around 1979 in Kent and split in 1983, this was a pretty short lived concern for sure, but these records speak volumes. A hard mix of 70's heavy rock and punk energy make this prime NWOBHM. First up the "Save the khan" single in 1979. The keyboard intro to "Save the khan" threw me at first and I thought I might not dig it that much, but it has a certain neanderthal charm to it and I ended liking the keyboards after all. With lyrics that almost remind of BAD NEWS. The b-side "Juliet's tomb" is good but not great, these guys just didn't have it completely nailed down yet. But then comes the "Metal messiah" single and I really love this one, again we have keyboards at the beginning of the first track "Metal messiah", but when the fire kicks in, it's alot hotter. The lyrics to this one are kind funny also and The title says it all really! The main riff to this one is really awesome and heavy with some cool churning drums And some great NWOBHM style vocals. Next we got "Sweet alcohol", again the lyrics here are totally awesome and again the title really puts it best. There are some cool slide guitars in this one that surprised me, but they sound great and really add to the song. The last one on this is "Hell hound on my trail", a heavy bluesy metal stomper with that SABBATH / PRIEST gallop to it, a great fucking track. This is kind of quirky at times and might not please everyone, but if you like WITCHFINDER GENERAL or some of the more stoner-esque NWOBHM bands then get this. With only a mere 500 copies pressed, I doubt your gonna find this one at the corner shop, but they did put out a best of compilation in 2007 called 'Live to fight again'. So give it a listen and see what you think.

CARESS - RETURN OF THE BEAST (ger) 1989

Not to much I can say about this one except I like it. Formed in 1986 and split in 1991. Self released in 1989, this seems to be their only piece of vinyl and not a bad one at that. Here we are again with some great female vocals, this time by Coco Laross, very reminiscent of Doro Pesch and some WARLOCK material, which must admit I love. That said this is not as good as any of the early Doro stuff, but it will still do the trick. I of course love the pseudo satanic lyrics, sometimes they just really make this old records better. Which reminds me, my friend Noel is always getting on to me about the satan shtick, that it's worn out and used up(and that I use it way to much in my own songs), but I don't really see it that way. To me it's just a part of metal and metal has to be evil! If metal's not from the devil then I want no part of it. People always try to make the argument that BLACK SABBATH weren't really evil and that the just talked about evil, while this may be true , no one would have gave a shit about them if they hadn't thought they were so damn EVIL! Now let me just say that I don't believe in the devil in the least, but I still like to hear satanic declaration's to the evil master SATAN in my metal! OK I'm really off track and rambling on this one. Check this out for some headbanging fun with some cool female vocals!

TRANCE - POWER INFUSION 1983

This manic German band were formed in 1979 , pretty close to the beginning of the euro metal explosion and these dudes certainly had their hearts in the right place. They must have been huge SCORPIONS fans ,because this sounds a hell of alot like certain material from the German gods. I bought this in the late 90's when I was on the road, I think it was in a used record store in Denver and I really only bought it because of the cover and back photo. On this album they have an almost SPINAL TAP look to them and so does the cover, I mean that in the best possible way. I love this type cover and it reminds me of shit like the first METAL CHURCH, SAVAGE GRACE's "Master of disguise" album or EXCITER's "violence and force" cover. I really was psyched to get it. Once I finally got somewhere that I could listen to it, I almost shit my brain! Starting off with "Heavy metal queen"a metal masterpiece with an infectious chorus that I cant get out of my head sometimes, to the killer "Rockstar", another metal stomper that has a total Scorp-vibe happening. The next up "Children of illusion", "Glasshouse" and the heavy ass "SLD" pack a headbanger punch. Then we get the fucking uber classic "Shock power", I cant say enough about this track,this is another one that I have putting on comp tapes for years. "Burn your lies", "Sensation" and "Storm and thunder" all rock out hard and over all this is a very solid piece of vinyl. They have some other good albums too, but later changed their name to TRANSMISSION and made a few albums and then changed back to TRANCE then back to TRANSMISSION again when they reunited. Geez enough already. This just further proves my SPINAL TAP theory. So get it already!

AGONY BAG-FEELMAZUMBA

Goddamn this is a great fucking album! I had seen their name and picture before, but hadn't heard this album. So finally I came across it a few years ago and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. Man what a classic, this is a real statement of an album. Here's a band so totally caught in between glam rock, punk and the oncoming metal movement. Formed in 1976 these guys were on the tale end of the glam era, complete with full make up, costumes and theatrics out the ass, but packing a wallop unlike any of there contemporaries. The music featured here is at all times original, sure sometimes there are hints of ALICE COOPER and other heavy rock acts, plus punk bands from that time, but that's where it stops. Originality is the one of best things this record has going for it, from their look to their sound, I cant think of a band that is like them. No one can be completely original but this is closer than most. Clive Jones vocals really ride the punk line on songs like the classic single "Rabies is a killer" and the drop dead rocker "Sally of Leicester". While other tracks like "Never never land" and "White stick" come off totally sophisticated and well read.There is not a bad track on this album, which is something I rarely find and it will appeal to people into hard rock, heavy metal or punk. The guitars are heavy in classic rock / punk way and the drums and bass are very solid and unique. The subject matter here goes from cartoonish ridiculousness to theatrical and doomy. There are some many reasons why this is great and there all probably the same reasons they never got anywhere. Record companies hate original bands, unless they already sold a bunch of records on their own. Real rock 'n' roll never wins!
Do yourself a favor and get this one now!

DUM DUM BULLET-EMMENE MOI EN ENFER 7'' EP 83 + DUM DUM BULLET L.P 86. + BONUS TRACK

Here's some stuff that's still pretty unknown, but I do think people are starting to come around to them. Formed in 1979, these fellows were kicking around for quite some time before their debut album "Dum Dum Bullet". They first kicked off on the vinyl front around 1983 with the self produced single "Emmène Moi En Enferin". Starting the single off with the title track,this comes off as quite a wild affair,the drums and bass are straight forward,fast and pretty punk. The vocals are pretty ruff and tough and sung in French by bassist Jimmy Heudes. The guitar sounds a little MOTERHEAD-ish at times and guitarist Jean-Luc Davy can solo pretty damn good for this to be there first single. After this these dude released a demo in 83 and 85, also stopping along the way for the 1984 Sully's/Loire Rock compilation featuring their track "Get down".
Now after 6 0r 7 seven years of being a band these guys finally get around to releasing a full album and it's a damn good one. By this point the vocals duties have been handed to Francois Sorin who does a great job and also sings in English. I cant say enough about the power and energy that I hear in this album, their metal but they sing about rock 'n' roll, these dudes also look like a bunch of social misfits and that probably why this kicks so hard. Right out of the gate on the L.P. you get the song "Dum dum bullet" which just rips out of the speakers as a mixed up punk metal rock 'n' roll assault, I when bands have songs with their name in the title. Then they hit "Burning power" ,this has got to be one of the all time metal scorchers, I just want to get up and go crazy when this comes on, I mean it makes me nuts, I love this fucking track. On to "Smell of the night", "Sally" and "We are the virgins" all amazing blasters that build up to some pretty fucking metal vocal shit and guitars. Then these guys go right back down to the total dirt bag metal punk of "She' a bitch", this is another total rocker that always makes smile. The last two are also good, "Let you down" totally follows in the style already set up by the rest of the album, but "Down top love" really tries to throw on the rock radio movies for a split second before kicking back into the steamroller churn that is there sound.

I love that these guys were just trying to be a band and didn't try to identify themselves with a certain scene. That's always the best kinda band. I also included a bonus track that I found some where called "Hey mum , who's the junk?", while not there best track,you still need to hear because it rips. There's not a bad track on this album or single either and if you don't bang your head to this you need buy some indie rock and get the fuck out of here!

MANDRAKE-FAR BEYOND THE POINT E.P.(1990)

OK I have already mentioned my passion for female singers and this is no exception.The vocals on this won me over on the first listen. This is German I think and it sounds like it, very plodding drums and heavy guitar with GIRLSCHOOL meets early WARLOCK type vocals. This isn't fast but it is kinda heavy and the lyrics are sort of mysterious, as in I don't always understand them. My favorite on here would easily be "The revolutioner's grave", I don't know what this one is about but, it's a classic cut and the rest of this E.P. is killer also. I have no idea what became of them, but this is there only release that I know about and although this is from 1990 which is little out of my range for classic metal it still features a classic metal performance for total metal heads, give it a spin!

AKILLA-THE CURSED 1989

This U.S band is a real mix up. A blend of thrash, power metal and NWOBHM styles. The music is pretty heavy, with very crunchy guitars and reminds me alot of a heavier HOLOCAUST or CLOVEN HOOF with a harder edge. The vocals by Mike Villamena are what really make this great, sung in the classic NWOBHM style, they add an angry youth feeling that makes so many of these records awesome. This sounds much older than 89. Many of these songs were previously on the album "As for me , as for you (1988)" in different versions, but the album featured here is of far Superior recording quality and performance. Some of this shows these dudes pushing into thrashier territory with some faster playing and meaner riffs, but they had to already be throwbacks by 1989 so this couldn't have been that popular. Since death metal was about to take complete control of the metal scene and well all know what happened after that. So I'm pretty sure most kids at the time thought this was old hat. Still this is a great if not classic piece of vinyl for fans of NWOBHM, early thrash and power metal. This is a hell of alot better than any new school retro band your gonna put down your hard earned money for, so check it out!

DON HINSON AND HIS RIGORMORTICIANS-MONSTER DANCE PARTY

Well I searched for this album forever and it was totally worth it, rivaling the sounds of Bobby "Boris" Pickett and Zacherle himself. This is a monster music landmark. It contains one of the all time greatest songs in monster music,"Riboflavin flavored, non carbonated poly-unsaturated blood". This song is fucking amazing ,as are the rest of the tracks on this album. You may have heard a great version of "Riboflavin flavored" by 45 GRAVE many years ago. That how I first heard this song and had no idea who had recorded it first or that there was an entire album out there just waiting to be found. Somewhere on my quest to get as much Halloween and horror related music as possible I came back across the slice of graveyard genius. There is also a single for the a couple of songs from this album, pictured here. It unfortunate that not that much horror related Don Hinnson music out there, this is one of his only few haunts in the horror jukebox. His other music is all parody based and some of it is pretty funny, but none of it can touch this shit!

WHITE BOY AND THE AVERAGE RAT BAND(1980)

Wow this is a scorcher! Punk fuzz from Toledo,Ohio that's almost metal, almost rock ,But has a sound all its own. This is pretty far out on the limb, these dudes are all over the place. From the proto metal of "Neon Warriors" and the robotic punk metal of "Sector 387" to the plodding dirge of "Leaving on vacation" and the heavy stoner rock of "Oriental doctors" this is a different kinda album. The vocals Are always little strange and vary from from song to song, but the music has a similar feel across the whole record, the guitars are always white hot and over driven, which sometimes make this feel punk and the drums have primitive Grand Funk vibe. I cant think of another band that really sounds like these guys and that's a quality I always look for. This is the bands only full length album and a very unique record,Totally worth a listen for sure.

WALTER RIZZATTI - 1999:BRONX WARRIORS OST

Here's a great post apocalyptic soundtrack by Walter Rizzatti to Enzo G.Castillari's grind house epic 1999: Bronx Warriors. Theses dudes cranked out several of these future cheapies during the late 70's and early 80's and they all feature cool soundtracks. But sometimes its obvious that the recording quality was much higher than the quality of the film it was made for. The opening track lurches on the scene with some heavy synth and drums as a Pink Floyd-ish guitar works a nuclear landscape for all its worth. This perfectly sets up the tone of the film. There are slight hints Goblin, ELP and at times maybe a little Hawkwind even. This is still distinctly Italian stuff, Not to many of these bands/artists manage to stand out and still fit the movie, but this guy does it very well. There are several different guitar sounds going on here from kinda funky to almost heavy. Through in some heavy percussion, flutes, choirs and a ton of bass and you have a very strong soundtrack. That pounds out abandonment and loss in fatal future!

The opening credits to this Enzo G. Castellari cheese classic are some of the coolest images put to celluloid, This movie steals shamelessly from a few sources mainly Escape from New York and The Warriors, but don't let that fool you its a really cool movie on its own. Enzo made several good flicks including Inglorious bastards, The Violent breed and also Escape from the Bronx and Warriors of the wasteland all of which are Which are the bookends to this trilogy.

GARGOYLE-VIOLENCE IS GOLDEN 1986 (new jersey)

Heres a raging cacophony of thrash metal madness. I'm pretty sure these guys practiced all summer long just to make this tape in there garage. CLASSIC!. My favorite thing about this has got be the vocals,which most of the time are pure thrash but sometimes slip in to a very cartoonish demon voice. They just push this beyond being a reasonable band. I love totally it. Songs like "Blessed is he" and "Mayhemic destruction" and "Violence is golden" slam and slash there way across the brain like a hot dagger and again the vocals are so amateur that they are genius. The music here is pretty classic break neck thrash with pretty distorted raunchy guitars and bass. The drumming on this is probably the weak link, sometimes it lends a certain garage band charm, but most of the time I just wish the guy was better. That however does not stop this from totally kicking ass. This is pretty raw,garage thrash type shit and not for all tastes. The lyrics are you typical thrash and slash type subject matter and some really off the map solo's. I think this will make most old metal fans smile. Also do not miss the outro called "Graveyard part 1",its priceless and made me love this that much more.

JOHN ZACHERLE-MONSTER MASH L.P.

Well in case you wonder where I got the title of this blog, give this little ditty a spin.John Zacherle is easily the king of all horror hosts, I don't care what anyone has to say about it. With that said I have only seen a handful of footage of those classic shows, mostly due to a DVD that came a few years ago. Anyway what really got me into Mr.Zacherle was his music. When I was very young , maybe in 2nd or 3rd grade we had a Halloween party at school. Somehow, I don't know how I got a copy of a single with the classic "The witchdoctor" by David Seville on one side and "Dinner with drac" by John Zacherle on the other. I have asked my mom and dad a million times how I that single (hoping they would slip up and finally tell me) but still to this day I have no idea. None the less I loved it to death, in fact I remember the day it broke in half and was never to be played again. Back to the story, I of course took the record to school and played it at the Halloween party and it went over great.We awkwardly danced around to the weird sounds and lyrics of a Halloween classic. I believe this moment had a profound effect on me and forever made me a fan of "The Cool Ghoul" and horror music. Too this day I only know a handful of people who love horror music as much as I do. Anyway many years passed by and I lost track of Zacherle, Only thinking about him when he might pop up in old horror mag I bought or something, always vowing to get all his music if I could find it, Which I rarely did. I did however locate a few tracks on one of those old K-TEL collections called "Funny bone". But that was about it. Then one day at a flee market in southern Indiana, I was flipping through some crusty old vinyl like I always do and I found a copy of this fantastic album. I have only had a few experiences like this in my life,you know one of those moments where you actually get something you really want and can't believe you could be so lucky! If only we all had more days like that. I reminder buying an arm full of records that day , but I cant remember any of them because my mind was 100% on ol' Zach. When I got home I had to clean the record before playing it,which almost drove me insane. Finally I let it spin and suddenly out came the wonderfully morbid sounds of "Dinner with drac", every time I hear it I feel just a little better. Zacherle has several other albums like "Spook along with Zacherle" , "Scary tales" and "Monster mash party"and all of them are good, but this one is tops for sure. I will try to post them all around Halloween this year if I get a chance. Just so you know this is not the original "Monster mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett, which is also totally awesome. This is Zach's reworking of that track(though not as good as the original)plus 9 other knock off type horror parody classics. So get out of your crypt and check this one out you bunch zombies!......Oh yeah I almost forgot....Goodnight whatever you are!

What you have here is a real document of pure rock 'n' roll punk fever. The school bullies live at the Moonlight club in West Hampstead, You don't see or hear bands like this anymore. Of course The school bullies were just another name for The Damned in case you had some questions. In the late seventies The Damned played out under several different names like The Doomed and Les Punks, but on this particular night they were The school bullies and someone just happened to record it, thankfully. This album is on fire with white hot energy from the very start,first with"Teenage dream" a hands down punk classic, then to "Stretcher case" another fantastic lost Damned gem, into a crazy cover "ballroom blitz" other Damned classics like "Born to kill", the metallic "Melody lee" and over the top take on MC5's "Looking at you".This is the best Damned live document out there and one of the top 3 Damned albums in my personal opinion.

SIMON STOKES SUPER POST!

Here's a guy who should need no introduction, but yet he does. Simon has got to be one of the best keep secrets in rock 'n' roll, Drop his name to most music fans and suddenly they draw a blank,but for those who are familiar with his work he is a genius,no doubt about it. No one else could have made these records,drenched in the biker lifestyle at a time when bikers were still bikers not rich ass yuppie pieces of shit like nowadays. Drug culture was underground and not at the mall and the only people who had tattoos were convicts,bikers and the military. So at the time Simon must have been pretty scary to Mr.suit and the status quo. Sure there were hippies running around all over the place but to me Simon does not fit that mold at all. His songs are full of violence ,drugs,transsexuals and Harley's, delivered in a gruff almost Howling wolf vocal style. Not exactly a Grateful dead show, maybe a Stones show but not the Dead. There's actually alot to the Simon Stokes story, From being signed at the same time as the Stooges and MC5 , doing an album with Timothy Leary, to his later soundtrack work on the Outlaw riders soundtrack, the Punisher soundtrack and one of the Child's Play movies to being featured in the "American pop" movie. Far more than I could ever go into here on this page and he's still making music. Luckily the man made some music that will explain all you really need to know.

First up is Simon Stokes and the Nighthawks. An absolute classic piece of vinyl, Simon had been in several heavy psych bands leading up to this, but he really went for it on this one. Its very lowbrow dirty rock 'n' roll sound would have even frightened the most jaded listener of the time. This music simply oozes sleaze. From the biker anthem's "Big city blues" and "Ride on angel" to the down right depressing "You've been in" there no doubt that Simon a had a unique and very real vision of his music, give this a listen and then flip off a yuppie on a hog!

Next up is Simon's masterpiece and my personal favorite "Simon Stokes and the black whip thrill band". From the album cover to title to the songs included this is a classic. Simon's voice is even more weathered on this one and the songs are a little darker. Included are a re-record of "Ride on angel" plus many other great tunes like "The devil just called my name", "Should have married Peggy sue" and the classic "The wolf pack rides at night"

Next is a lessor but still good album, I think its interesting that Simon took this turn. It seems like he was being a little watered down here, I'm not sure if that was his call or someone else's, never the less this is a OK album that has a few really good songs. Again we get another re-record of "Big city blues" this time around it's given an almost disco make over, which really should be heard by any fan to be believed. I put off buying this one for along time and I can see why it's not making any top ten lists, but I am glad I bought at least for one song called "Earthquake". It which shows Simon commanding a much larger and more Vegas type band, I can only speculate about how this came about in real life. Who knows really, Simon was hanging out with a weird crowd, I remember seeing a photo of him with Sammy Davis Jr. around this time so maybe had his sights set on the ageing rat pack who really knows, all we have are the albums. So give Simon a listen and see what you think!

Holy ba-jessuz! This is really great, I recently sent this to my good friend Professor Black and he confirmed that this was a classic also. 10 out of 10 on this one. I got this awhile back and thought it was some kinda of NWOBHM stuff or some other euro/Scandinavian shit, but I was way the fuck off. These dudes are from fucking Kansas for fucks sake! Totally unbelievable, they should have really gotten somewhere, so what happened. I don't have the slightest clue.Every song on this single is good and alot better than tons of shit that was coming out at the time. Most of this is even edging toward radio friendly. However this picture of them would probably run off just about any record company around at the time, for Christs sake they look like fucking DETECTIVE! Still the music on this single is what matters and they could have given most of the catchier English metal bands a run for there money.
I think if these dudes had been from anywhere but Kansas they might have made a real go of it. Carry on our wayward sons!

THIN END OF THE WEDGE-LIGHTS ARE ON GREEN 7" 1981

Now here's a killer single for sure! First of all let me say that I do love chick singers and Babes Norris has a great voice for this shit. This is kinda rock 'n' rolly at time and not really that heavy, but the songs are both good.More in a "Kick it out" HEART kinda way than most of the other NWOBHM bands at the time.

Don't let that stop you from checking this one out though, it's a damn good piece of vinyl that has certainly been lost in the shuffle of things. Formed in Southport,England at the very beginning of the NWOBHM era. I don't know if this group played out much, but two members went on to be in FAG ASH LIL, Who have a good pub following . This band is just another question mark of what might have been.

REINCARNATE - TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT 7" 1982 + DEMO

I really don't know shit about these dudes,I had only read about this single in the NWOBHM encyclopedia. Once I finally got to hear it I was amazed. Its pretty common for a record this rare to get over hypeed due to it's obscure nature,but this one really delivered. Formed in the U.K. in 1980, they should have been in on the ground floor of the whole movement. The songs on the single are both very well written and played with that exact British metal feeling you crave from the early 80's selections. This was produced by Les Hunt from DEMON and you can maybe hear a little DEMON influence creeping in. I cant begin to understand why these guys didn't get farther. The are surely better than the bulk of bands on there level at the time. There is acertain early Metallica demo feeling happening here and I wonder if Lars has this one in his collection, what am I saying, sure he does. This is right at the perfect time where metal was coming into it's own but still had a huge hard rock influence going on. I wish these guys had at least made a proper album, but until one floats to the surface,this is all we got. There is a bootleg out there of this single,but it might cost you just as much as the really one. Good luck, now go give it a listen!

FABIO FRIZZI - CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD SOUNDTRACK + ZOMBIE SOUNDTRACK +THE BEYOND SOUNDTRACK

OK, I don't think it will shock anyone who knows me how much I love these albums. Fabio Frizzi is a fucking genius for sure! First off let me say that all three of these soundtracks and the movies that they are from are some of my all time favorites,in fact "City of the living dead" aka "Gates of hell" is my no.2 all time favorite horror movie, second only to "Return of the living dead".
This movie stopped me dead in my tracks when I was a kid. I first rented it at Star video in Stanford,Ky when I was around 12 or 13. My mom worked nights and I was allowed to rent whatever I wanted,which was always horror. This was one of the first movies to really weirded me out,I hadn't even seen shit like "Suspiria" yet so this might have been my first real Italian horror movie. I think one if the things that got me was the tone of the movie and the fact that it didn't make any fucking sense what so ever. The raining maggots scene and gut puking scene in "City"still make me smile to this day. Lucky for me the video store let me have the movie poster which hung on the door of my room at my moms house until it burned in 2001. Alright, enough about the movies. If you haven't seen them ,get off you ass right now and watch all three or never call yourself a horror fan again. Now these soundtracks are damn near perfect in my opinion.

They work very well in the films and work even better when you listen to the albums. Starting with city of the living dead,this is a uber downer of a record,the way Fabio uses the choirs and voices is unbeleivable.The tone andatmosphere on this one is so heavy and down trodden that you feel a sense of absolute depression right from the start.All the tracks feel unearthly and sepulchral.
Next up is"Zombie",though this movie is not perfect,awesome but not perfect. The soundtrack is a masterpiece, The music fits prefect over all the scene,but again is better as an album. Some of the riffs on this one are beyond doom and gloom. Almost funeral music at times,again the choir and voices do alot of work.Sometimes these albums feel like a more affluent GOBLIN, the music is in the same vein but the vocals make a big difference. These two are on pair with anything GOBLIN has ever done.

Now as for the beyond soundtrack,I love it too but it reminds me of the turn GOBLIN took on "Suspiria" It's a much mellower affair and the whole thing quieter and more relaxed than the other two mentioned here.It also on plays on a couple of different themes that ind of wear on the listener.Still this is amazing album with some very creepy moments that match the movie perfectly.

If you feel like making musical love to the dead, these three will be the perfect soundtrack!

BEOWULF-BEOWULF 1986

Considered one of the "fathers of crossover", I don't know too much about these guys but I do love this album. I had heard they're tracks "Taste the steel" and "Unicorn" on the "Welcome to Venice" comp but hadn't gotten this album, which sounds a little different than the comp tracks(less suicidal).This is crossover, but in a different vein. Not at all like D.R.I or CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER type of stuff. This has much more in common with something like MOTORHEAD, WARFARE or even ENGLISH DOGS as far as the sound goes and there's a very rock 'n' roll vibe going on most of the tracks,which I really enloy. Obviously these guys were into alot of punk, with lots of bass classic hardcore bass lines starting the songs and the general hardcore style drumming. But the metal shines through at all times. You wouldn't believe this was from California in the 80's. Though these guys are closely related to SUICIDAL TENDENCIES in alot of round about ways this has almost nothing in common with the SUICIDAL sound,Maybe a little bit of NO MERCY, but not SUICIDAL. I remember looking at this album many years ago at Cut corner's
"record celler" store and passing on it for some stupid reason, I probably bought another URIAH HEEP record! There are a couple of other Beowulf/Beowolf's out there so make sure you get the right one. For all you old motor bangers out there,please give this one a shot,you might be surprised. Check it out!

AXTON PRYTE-DEMO 1984 + THE LAB E.P.(France)

I Downloaded this somewhere quite along time ago and didn't listen to it at first, mainly because of the picture of these guys that was included and now pictured here.Dont get me wrong I like some glam metal and glam rock (the older stuff anyway), but these dudes do look pretty lame so who could blame me.I did the same thing with HEAVY PETTIN and boy was I ever wrong because this E.P. is fucking steller dude.From the first song "Suicidal flight" I was hooked,the riffs are awesome and a little weird.The vocals are way over the top high pitched metal wailing.This dude is way off key sometimes but it's so nutty that it really makes this a cool sounding record. It's hard to believe the guys in this picture played this shit. It's not that it's really hardcore or anything,this is just good solid classic metal with alot of originality which is what Im always looking for. If your just really into thrash and fast stuff,you might not dig this so much, as all the songs are pretty mid-tempo type shit. There is a certain JUDAS PRIEST vibe in some of the songs and maybe a little QUEENSRYCHE thrown in also, but not nearly as pompus. I took the time to also include they're demo, which is also pretty good but very low sound quility so skip to e.p. first and if you like it go back and check out the demo. I think they were once called GENGIS KHAN but changed they're name before these recordings, Im not sure. None the less this E.P. is classic metal all the way, The kind they just dont make anymore!

ELDRITCH RITE-DEMO 1986

Another classic texas band. This demo blew me away! Totally awesome thrash with awesome

guitars and very unique vocals.Sometime this guy(Chris Orloski) reminds me of a more metal Mike Muir in the best possiable way,not in the funky kinda way. Make no mistake this is pure old school thrash. The Playing is kinda sloppy at times and the songs all have a punky "were all still learning" type feel,sorta like old DESTRUCTION ,which I love! Sometimes the drums drop out and the guitars seperate,but there are some really cool tempo changes and vocal shit goin on here and some very creative riffs for sure. Some of this reminds me of the first DEVASTATION demo also,which I might post at a later time. The solo's are Pretty awesome,very off the cuff type shit that just kills.The whole thing just lends itself to a very energetic and upbeat metal demo feeling. "Rampant corpse" is Probally my favorite track if I had to pick one. Jam this shit loud as hell in your Malibu classic and bang your fucking head!

RIGOR MORTIS-DEMO 1986

I dont know where I got this demo from but it kills.I have been a RIGOR MORTIS fan since I was just a little pup.When the first album came out I was obssessed with TEXAS CHAINSAW part 2 and RE-ANIMATOR.
So along came a band that not only was one the fastest I had ever heard but were also obssessed with these movies and other 70's and 80"s horror flicks and they were from texas for fucks sake.I remember seeing an ad for the first album in Fangoria or gorezone magazine at the time and thinking the album cover was fucking amazing and that I had to own it.I bought it in Danville,Ky on cassette(which I still have).Most of the tracks on here are alternate versions of the songs from the first album and also features a demo version of "Foaming at the mouth"which appeared in studio form on the "The Decline of the western civilization part 2 soundtrack" + plus one unreleased song "The troll".I think there were studio versions of both of these included on the cd re-release of the first album.This demo pre-dates the album by a couple of years so it is quite a bit rawer ,which should appeal to fans of this kind of stuff.This is amazing horror obssessed thrash metal with that hard punk edge that I love.The guitars are beyond fast and the songs are very catchy gore filled masterpieces.Every album they put out was great,so if you like this demo get everything you can find by them.These guys are back together nowadays and claim to be working on a new album,let's hope they make it happin.
